Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of
Biafra (MASSOB)/ Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) yesterday accused security
operatives of harassing and arresting its members indiscrimnating, including
seizure of members’ items at a military checkpoint in Uturu, Abia state.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, leader of the group in Ebonyi state, Mr.
John Nwifuru, who said the group would no longer tolerate intimidation of its
members by security agents in the country, wondered why a peaceful organization
not known for carrying arms and ammunition would continue to suffer inhuman
treatment from the security agents.
He said: “We are not happy with the arrest of our members by
the Nigerian Army on 27th February, 2018 in Uturu at Army checkpoints. The army
arrested some of our security personnel going to take over from another
security officers working at Biafra headquarters at Owerri. “The Nigerian Army
arrested twenty of them and took them to Abia state Police Command where they
were detained and released by the court.
“They also made away with all their belongings including
eighteen security uniforms and other Biafra items and they collected the sum of
two hundred and fifty thousand, fiftyfive kobo (N250, 000.55) in their
possession and one CG motorcycle are still in their possession. We want them to
release those items to us with immediate effect.”
